Eligibility requirements

  • Hold a current Commercial Pilot Certificate (CPL) or an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATPL)
  • 18 years old
  • Able to read, speak and understand English
  • Obtain a FAA Medical Certificate (prior to first solo flight)
  • Maximum weight 275 lb. 

Course requirements and costs

The certified flight instructor course requires at least 15 hours of pilot in command in category and class of aircraft. The instructor course is the transition to the left seat as well as mastering teaching. 

FAA regulations require 200 hours of helicopter flight time to instruct in the R44. (SFAR 73 to part 61)

Course completion

  • Pass a FAA Written Knowledge Test
  • Pass an Oral and Practical Flight Test
