Eligibility requirements

  • Hold a current Commercial Pilot Certificate (CPL) or an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATPL)
  • 18 years old
  • Able to read, speak and understand English
  • Obtain a FAA Medical Certificate (prior to first solo flight)
  • Maximum weight 275 lb.

The Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII) training program will follow the same format as the Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) training program.


There are no additional flight experience requirements in the helicopter beyond preparing with an authorized Instructor.  


FAA REGULATIONS REQUIRE 200 HOURS OF HELICOPTER FLIGHT TIME TO INSTRUCT IN THE R44. (SFAR 73 TO PART 61)

Course completion

  • Pass a FAA Written Knowledge Test
  • Pass an Oral and Practical Flight Test
