Helicopter Lesson Plan for: Normal Approach

Objective: Transition from cruise to hover

 

Controls: Cyclic - Attitude/Closure Rate, Collective - Glide Path, Pedals - Trim, Throttle - RPM

 

Technique:

  1. Landing checks
  2. 60kts at 300AGL
  3. Establish descent about ½ on canopy depending on height
  4. Use collective to control descent rate, cyclic for closure rate
  5. Fast walking pace as ground reference
  6. When approaching LZ, slight cyclic flare to stop closure and raise collective to compensate for ETL loss and stop descent
  7. Left pedal to compensate for power addition
  8. Check descent rate < 300fpm
  9. Transition to hover

Hazards (solutions):

  1. Low RPM
  2. Settling with power
  3. Collision

Errors (solutions):

  1. Failure to maintain RPM
  2. 2. Failure to maintain glide path
  3. 3. Failure to maintain ground track within 100' with pedals
