View this movie with technique -or- View this movie without technique

Objective: Approach to land at a steeper path than normal to allow for obstacle clearance.

Controls: Cyclic - speed, attitude, ground track, Collective - altitude, descent rate, Pedals - yaw, Throttle - RPM

Technique:

  • 1. Perform before landing checklists
  • 2. Analyze landing zone (WOTFEEL)
  • 3. 50 kts at 300' AGL
  • 4. Reference points if you lose sight of LZ
  • 5. Establish descent when LZ is approx console height
  • 6. Descent rate of about 15 degrees
  • 7. Walking pace on approach
  • 8. Passing through ETL check descent < 300FPM

Hazards (solutions):

  • 1. Operation within H/V diagram
  • 3. Striking Object (clear area - left,right,tail)
  • 4. Settling with power (check descent)

Errors (solutions):

  • 1. Failure to maintain RPM
  • 2. Failure to make pre-landing checks of aircraft and area
  • 3. Poor choice of approaches
  • 4. Disorientation on final approach
  • 5. Missing landing point
