Helicopter Lesson Plan for: Hover

View this movie with technique -or- View this movie without technique

 

Objective: Stationary contol and slow taxi of helicopter.

 

Controls: Cyclic - movement, Collective - height, Pedals - directional control, Throttle - RPM

 

Technique:

Hover
  • 1. Focus 20-30' away
  • 2. Correct for drift using ALL controls (one input affects another)
Hover Taxi
  • 1. Reference
  • 2. Cyclic for movement
  • 3. Brisk walk
  • 4. Small pedal movements for yaw control
  • 5. Clear tail
  • 6. Left pedal turns in high wind
  • 7. Align cyclic for wind correction (slightly into wind)

Hazards (solutions):

  • 1. Rollover (proper use of cyclic and collective, maintain height, clear area)
  • 2. Striking Object (clear area - left,right,tail)

Errors (solutions):

  • 1. Target Fixation (deliberate control when turning head)
  • 2. Failure to maintain height (use reference point)
  • 3. Failure to maintain heading (pedals)
  • 4. Failure to maintain direction (cyclic)
  • 5. Tendency to rush taxi
