Helicopter Lesson Plan for: Hover Autorotation

View this movie with technique -or- View this movie without technique

 

Objective: Safe touchdown from engine failure in the hover.

 

Controls: Cyclic - Ground Track, Collective - Climb/Descent/Cushion, Pedals - Heading, Throttle - N/A

 

Technique:

  1. 3-5' Hover
  2. Heading into wind
  3. Safe landing surface
  4. Level
  5. RPM Top of green
  6. Roll throttle into detent (instructor or student later)
  7. Right pedal
  8. Slight right cyclic (loss of translating tendency)

Hazards (solutions):

  1. Rollover
  2. Hard Landing
  3. Ground Resonance
  4. Rotor/tail Contact (don't lower collective too quickly)

Errors (solutions):

  1. Improper pedal technique
  2. Failure to roll off throttle completely
  3. Improper collective (too little or too late or too early)
  4. Improper cyclic - drifting
