Helicopter Lesson Plan for: Pickup

View this movie with technique -or- View this movie without technique

Objective: Transition from the ground to a hover.

Controls: Cyclic - movement, Collective - height, Pedals - yaw, Throttle - RPM

Technique:

  • 1. Takeoff Check (top to bottom and back to collective)
  • 2. Clear Area
  • 3. Cyclic centered, RPM Green, Collective Down, Pedals Neutral
  • 4. Reference point 20-30'
  • 5. Raise collective to 15-18" (light on skids) - eyes outside
  • 6. Raise collective, left pedal as necessary, cyclic as needed to center liftoff
  • (most times slightly aft cyclic as you lift off with passenger)
  • 7. 3-5' Hover
  • 8. Note hover power (24-27")

Hazards (solutions):

  • 1. Rollover/Stuck Skid (2 stage liftoff or slight yaw on liftoff)
  • 2. Improper takeoff check (use checklists)
  • 3. Striking Object (clear area - left,right,tail)
  • 4. Rollover (proper use of cyclic)

Errors (solutions):

  • 1. RPM (compensate for coning, listen for RPM)
  • 2. Liftoff too quickly (use 2 stage liftoff)
  • 3. Drifting (find cyclic center, anticipate cyclic forces)
