Helicopter Lesson Plan for: Pinnacle Approach and Landing

View this movie with technique -or- View this movie without technique

 

Objective: Safe approach to a summit, ridgeline, or rooftop.

 

Controls: Cyclic - Speed/Attitude/Ground Track, Collective - Climb/Descent, Pedals - Heading,Trim, Throttle - RPM

 

Technique:

  1. High Recon as in confined area approach
  2. Check available power
  3. Low recon as in confined area approach
  4. Select approach path with consideration for items in recon (obstacles, wind, etc)
  5. If approaching ridge, into wind at maximum 45 degree angle
  6. Touchdown toward forward of LZ
  7. Note density altitude as factor on performance

Hazards (solutions):

  1. Settling with power
  2. Ground contact
  3. Turbulence, drafts

Errors (solutions):

  1. Failure to perform proper recon
  2. Failure to control RPM
  3. Overshoot/undershoot LZ
  4. Failure to control descent
