Helicopter Lesson Plan for: Rapid Deceleration (Quick Stop)

Objective: Used to terminate an aborted takeoff.

 

Controls: Cyclic - Speed/Attitude/Ground Track, Collective - Altitude, Pedals - Trim, Throttle - RPM

 

Technique:

  1. Takeoff upwind 40/40
  2. Skids aligned with track
  3. Aft cyclic/lower collective
  4. Right Pedal
  5. Use reference to control ballooning
  6. Level aircraft
  7. Increase power to stop descent
  8. Left Pedal
  9. Establish Steep Approach
  10. < 300fpm

Hazards (solutions):

  1. Settling with power
  2. Ground contact with tail

Errors (solutions):

  1. Failure to coordinate cyclic and collective
  2. Failure to control RPM
  3. Failure to maintain ground track
  4. Failure to control descent
