Helicopter Lesson Plan for: Running Landing

View this movie with technique -or- View this movie without technique

Objective: Use ETL to assist with landing when not enough power to hover. High density or partial engine failure.

Controls: Cyclic - Attitude/Closure Rate, Collective - Glide Path, Pedals - Trim, Throttle - RPM

Technique:

  1. Shallow approach
  2. Power limitations
  3. Speed approx. 30 kts (above ETL)
  4. Skids aligned
  5. As touchdown is beginning, ETL should be evident
  6. Touchdown slightly on toes of skids
  7. Collective to control touchdown
  8. Slight forward cyclic to maintain rotor clearance
  9. Collective for speed control
  10. NO AFT CYCLIC
  11. Full collective down ONLY WHEN STOPPED

Hazards (solutions):

  1. Rollover (proper cyclic)
  2. Hard ground contact (minimal descent rate)

Errors (solutions):

  1. Too slow on the approach, lost ETL on touchdown
  2. Cyclic flare, improper attitude on touchdown
  3. Insufficicent power to cushion landing
  4. Improper RPM
  5. Improper Directional Control
