Helicopter Lesson Plan for: Shallow Approach

View this movie with technique -or- View this movie without technique

Objective: Shallower than normal approach, normally terminating in a running landing. May be used in an emergency for partial engine power.

Controls: Cyclic - Attitude/Closure Rate, Collective - Glide Path, Pedals - Trim, Throttle - RPM

Technique:

  1. Landing checks
  2. 60kts at 300'
  3. Establish shallow descent around compass height
  4. Measure speed by closure rate, same as normal app
  5. As ETL loss, add power to compensate

Hazards (solutions):

  1. Low RPM
  2. Collision
  3. Settling with power (watch descent rate, tailwind)

Errors (solutions):

  1. RPM Control
  2. Failure to maintain shallow approach
  3. Failure to maintain ground track
  4. Decelerating too quickly
