Helicopter Lesson Plan for: Normal Takeoff

View this movie with technique -or- View this movie without technique

 

Objective: Transition from hover to forward cruise flight.

 

Controls: Cyclic - Speed/Attitude/Ground Track, Collective - Climb Rate, Pedals - Trim, Throttle - RPM

 

Technique:

  1. Position helicopter (into wind preferable)
  2. Note obstacles
  3. Note hover power
  4. Cyclic gently forward to transition to fast hover tip path on horizon
  5. Note vibrations (transverse flow/right roll dissemetry of lift/blowback then ETL)
  6. 40 kts, slight cyclic pressure release to 2 fingers on horizon
  7. Note RPM climb, reduce if necessary
  8. 55 kts, slight cyclic release to 4 fingers
  9. Note power

  1. Collision with terrain

Errors (solutions):

  1. Failure to maintain RPM
  2. Failure to maintain heading
  3. Overpitch
  4. Descent on forward transition
